A Piece Of The Son’s Gold

Maria von Wedemeyer to Dietrich Bonhoeffer, Pätzig, 23 August, 1943 (in Love Letters from Cell 92, tr. John Brownjohn (Nashville: Abingdon Press, 1995)), 70:

Will you be writing to me today? I seem to see you as vividly as if I were sitting beside you. Your whole surroundings, your gestures, your hands and eyes. You'll write me the nicest letter, and—whatever it’s like—it will bring me a sunny day. No, not just a day. It will bring me a piece of the sun’s gold, one that I can absorb deep inside—one that outlasts any rain or storm and warms every little part of me with its radiant light. Thank you now and always, just for wanting to write to me.
