Autumn Feeling

Adolf Friedrich von Schack, Gesammelte Werke in zehn Bänden, vol. 2 (Stuttgart: 1897), Herbstgefühl, 177 (tr. ChatGBT—couldn’t but mention that, as my German is still not that great to translate a poem properly):

            As when, in frost-bound winds that kill,
            Summer’s last blossom sickens, wan,
            And here and there, upon the chill,
            A single leaf, red-gold, sways on:

            So over all my life there steals
            A gloomy, cold, nocturnal day;
            Why tremble, O! heart, while death draws near,
            Beneath thy ceaseless beat, why fear?

            Look round: the thicket stands stripped bare!
            Why play, as winds play in the boughs,
            With joy’s last withered remnant there?
            Be still, give up! Soon that, too, dies.

            Wie wenn im frost'gen Luftzug tödlich
            Des Sommers letzte Blüte krankt,
            Und hie und da nur, gelb und rötlich,
            Ein einzles Blatt im Windhauch schwankt:

            So schauert über meinem Leben
            Ein nächtlich trüber, kalter Tag;
            Warum noch vor dem Tode beben,
            O Herz, mit deinem ew'gen Schlag?

            Sieh rings entblättert das Gestäude!
            Was spielst du, wie der Wind am Strauch,
            Noch mit der letzten, welken Freude?
            Gieb dich zur Ruh! Bald stirbt sie auch.
